Here is my version of Moda Blockheads Block of the Week #4 by Jan Patek. This applique block is called Bee Skep. I think I made my bee hive a little top heavy but it will hold more bees. 🙂
Below are weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4 together. I changed my blocks to 12 1/2″ instead of 6 1/2″ blocks. I enjoy working with the larger blocks better. #modablockheads
I am going waaay out of my comfort zone.
Sami and I are sewing/constructing a boat enclosure for a friend’s boat. Luckily we are only doing a replacement so we are able to use the old panels as a pattern, sort of. Of course the ‘might as well’ comes into play–you know, as long as we are making this we might as well….
The boat has three separate panels around the console, navigational instruments, radios, and steering wheel area.
Picture 1 (left) is the completed side panel. It has mega zippers and Velcro to make the cabin (not sure if cabin is what it is called-I am not a boat person) dry and secure. Picture 2 on the right is the old center panel. I am working on the new one for the center now. The picture is a little deceiving. The panels are much bigger than they look. At least they feel like it when I am struggling to line them up to sew.
Here is my ‘monster sewing machine’. I think this thing will sew through plywood if the needle was strong enough. It will sew through multiple layers of marine vinyl, binding, and the marine ‘glass’ without even moaning. When I am not sewing boat stuff I use it for sewing motorcycle patches to leather jackets and making purses.
This project has been very challenging but I am getting a lot of experience and I am enjoying the satisfaction of seeing the completed panels.
I really miss my quilting.
I guess I am in my ‘star phase’ with quilts. Seems like I put stars somewhere on most of the ones I make. I hope I will look back with fondness when I jump to another design. I remember the log cabin era and the jelly roll season with good thoughts.

Here is my version of Moda 2017 Block of the Week block #3. This was another fun block to construct with easy to follow instructions. The block is called Four X by Jo Morton. I will have to admit I have changed from 6″ blocks to 12″ blocks. Me and small pieces just do not play well together. The fabric colors did not photograph true as the corners and center square are a dark purple and the dark wedges are rust colored. I am looking forward to next Wednesday for block #4. #modablockheads
Any of you that know me know that I don’t get out much. 🙂 I go grocery shopping once a month, the library every other week to replenish my audio books supply, and go to lunch with the girls every third Thursday….and that is basically it except for the occasional runs for fabric. I mostly use internet ordering and I love staying home with my Sami. I spent many years until my retirement working with the public so this life is ideal for me.
This past week was a total change from usual. My son and daughter-in-love visited from Georgia to attend the annual Daytona Beach Bike Week. I get to see my son twice a year, for Bike Week in the Spring and Biketober Fest in the Fall and I love it. This time I had a bonus with my Glenda too. We had a wonderful visit but it wasn’t long enough. They took me out to a wonderful dinner at the Conch House in St. Augustine and I enjoyed the left overs the next day. Sami was a little, maybe a lot, out of control but we are working on that. It is very hard for her to be nice when she is so excited to have people around besides just boring old mom.
Thursday was the monthly Bunnell Girls lunch. We get have a good time visiting, talking, laughing, and stuffing ourselves with delicious food. We decide the next place to go and take turns driving. Last month we picked the River Grille in Ormond Beach. A lovely place that sits right on the Tomoka River with a nice outdoor deck. We didn’t think about Bike Week last month when making our decision but we got the added entertainment by going through the bikers and passing the Iron Horse Saloon in Ormond Beach (David Allen Coe was performing that day) and seeing all the sights. What a treat for us.
Even though I enjoy my solitude I also enjoy my visits with the ‘kids’ and my girls lunch group. Now back to my sweat shop/sewing studio.
Here is Moda Blockheads #2 block. Of course now that I am looking at the picture I see a couple mistakes I need to correct. I will do another block in brown/tan colors. I am not convinced yet that I like 6 1/2″ blocks. I usually do at least 10″ blocks and I really enjoy 12″ ones. I am trying to step out of my comfort zone. #modablockheads
I usually do not join mystery blocks or quilt along groups, but after working on Lori Holt’s Farm Girl Vintage blocks and really enjoying them I decided to give this one a try. I am a fan of Moda fabrics and patterns, so here goes. This is my take on block #1 completed in scrappy blues. I think I will also do a block with browns. Twelve more completed blocks from the Farm Girl Vintage Book. These blocks are so much fun to do. I wish I had completed two of each blocks in different colors. It is much easier to cut two at the same time than to pull all my scraps back out later for another.
As I look back I can see where I would like to try them in all sorts of color ways. My sheep fabric is very appropriate as it is white background with tan curlies but there is not much contrast with the background fabric. The pumpkin looks very BIG and bright alongside the other blocks. Maybe I should have toned it down a bit.
I saw a picture of a quilt on Pinterest and I loved the simple design. It had large squares that showed off a pretty fabric and rail fence blocks set on point. There was no pattern, name of maker, or any information so I made the pattern based on the picture. I am a terrible photographer so my photos do not do justice to the lovely colors. It is a very large quilt that completely covers my queen size bed with a generous overhang.
This is the Baskets a-Plenty quilt that I started a few months back and posted it without the borders as I couldn’t decide what to use to make it bigger. I finally decided on Flying Geese along the edges. It is a very colorful queen size quilt.
Slowly but surely I am working down my pile of UFOs (unfinished objects for my non quilting friends.) If I could just make a dent in all the quilt ideas floating around in my head I would be in good shape.
Finally completed my Lone Star quilt! I pieced this top months ago and put off quilting it until I got some commissioned pieces done. This is the first pieced diamond star quilt I completed. It is based on the Starlight Express quilt in Jelly Roll Quilts book by Pam and Nicky Lintott. The finished measurement is 92″ x 92″ and it fits my queen size bed nicely.
