Block #8 of Pat Sloan’s Grandma’s Kitchen BOW is called Grandma’s Apron. My story about mammaw’s apron is probably the same as everyone…these were not clothing accessories. They were a much used and necessary tool. The apron was put on every morning immediately on top of the everyday dress and not taken off until bedtime. It was full-skirted with gathers around the waist, ties for tying in the back, and big pockets. Mammaw’s dresses came to her ankles and the apron reached from the waist to the bottom of her dress. She always kept a ‘better’ apron hanging on the back of the door that could be quickly grabbed and put on if company came to the door.
Her apron was used as a pot holder to grab the handles of hot pans from the stove, to wipe sweat and tears as needed, to hold clothes pins for hanging out clothes, as a bucket when gathering eggs and vegetables from the garden, as a dust cloth or to dry her hands, and to hold all kinds of items in the pockets. She even kept a needle and thread in the pockets to make repairs as needed.
Mammaw made her ‘fancy’ aprons from feed sack fabric and her everyday aprons were made from old dresses that were no longer usable. The front part of the dresses always had a little more use to them as they were protected by the apron.
This block is my favorite so far. Y’all know that I am afraid of applique but it is so stinking cute!
It is not too late to join this free quilt along. It is a lot of fun.
This is so cute! And your appliqué came out great! I’m 3 weeks behind now. I kinda like waiting and doing more than one block at a time

Thank you Tonya. That is a good plan. It takes longer to do one a time.

This is my favourite that I’ve seen! I love aprons…no idea why, but I have quite a few, both old and new.

Thanks Kate. I always wear an apron when I am quilting on the long arm to hold my scissors, big tweezers, extra bobbins, and thread scraps. Don’t use one for cooking though. 🙂

Hi Peggy,
This block is SO darn cute. I’m not a huge fan of appliqué but the cuteness is going to force me to make it. HAHA I love hearing your stories. My only memory of an apron is making one in Home Ec in 7th grade. ~smile~ Roseanne

Thanks Roseanne. Applique is not my favorite thing to do either but if it is cute…..I am a sucker for cuteness. I remember home ec. It was my favorite class.

I love to use steam-a-seam 2 for my apps. What did you use? Oh, and you know I’ve got to do her(Pat) apron challenge,LOL

I use Heat n Bond Lite. It seems to work pretty good and still feels soft, but I haven’t washed it yet. That will be the test. Looking forward to seeing your apron in the challenge.

I’ve washed pieces with SaS2 w/ no app edge stitching, so far have been pleased. Good to know if HnB washes up good. Thanks for sharing your applique experiences and tip on Pat’s apron challenge.~cheers Mona

Thanks Tierney. That would be a cute quilt. On Pat’s website she shows the apron block alternating with 16 patch blocks for a quilt and it is so cute….maybe.

I saw it! I spent some time on her blog/website and I am tempted to participate. I might at least download the block patterns. Thanks!

I am looking forward to doing this block, I don’t mind raw edge applique with blanket stitch, but not too fond of needle turn! Really enjoyed your apron story about your mammaw, what a great memory you have of her.

Thank you Kathryn. I do not like needle turn either.

This really got you telling stories!! ❤ They are familiar to me as my grandmother did many of the same activities with an apron on! They always had to have a pocket for a handkerchief. Love your block!

Thank you Mary. Part of this BOW challenge was to tell stories about your grandparents. Pat Sloan always starts us off with one of her stories and we continue following her subject for the week. It is a lot of fun and I am enjoying both the blocks and the memories.

Thank you. I hope it turns out OK….I have enough quilts hiding out in my closet because what looked good in my head did not transfer so well to fabric. LOL
