Grandma’s Kitchen Block of The Week #13 of 25

DSCN1226

Block #13 of the Grandma’s Kitchen Challenge by Pat Sloan is called Sunday Dinner. In addition to the block, followers share memories.

My memories of Sunday dinners are very pleasant. At my aunt’s house we usually had what she called a table full of people and the noon meal was called dinner. It was the main meal of the day. The evening meal was supper.

When we had fried chicken we got them from the hen house and not from the grocery. Roosters and hens that no longer produced eggs were what was chosen to grace the table. Some of the food served was a huge pot of chicken and dumplings, ham, pork roasts, meat loaf, deer roasts, or fried rabbit. A variety of vegetables were served, fresh from the garden in the summer or canned vegetables we ‘put up’ from the garden in the winter. We always had a big pot of pinto beans, corn bread, and a type of pickle relish called chow chow.

My Pappaw really enjoyed the Sunday dinners and he would walk across the field to join us. My aunt would say, “He is the first one to the table and the last one to leave.”

My mother also had big Sunday dinners at Ma Neal’s house. At Ma’s house the men were always served first. Mother often said that she was twelve years old before she knew that a chicken had more parts that a wing or a back. 🙂

I am a retired grandmother living in hot and sunny Florida. I spend most of my days doing what I love: sewing and quilting. I have a spoiled rotten Boston Terrier named Sami who keeps me busy mostly by cleaning up after her and refilling holes in the yard that she insists on digging and burying her toys. Of course then she digs them up and brings them into the house resulting in...you guessed it...more cleaning. I will be posting pictures of Sami, quilts, flowers, and other things as they come along. Glad to have you join me.

  1. We used to have Sunday Lunch together when I was very young – Daddy was a Butcher so we always had the best of the best cuts of the meats. Sundays always meant a roast, mashed potatoes, peas, and a salad. Few memories but those sporadic Sunday Lunches after church were good! Like your block.

  2. Beautiful block and memories….Sunday dinners are usually a roast of some sort, so it can cool while we are at church, with veggies from the garden and either sauce or maybe cinnamon apple rings to make it special. 😊

  3. I enjoyed reading about your family dinner. We never participated in a big family Sunday dinner. I do have fond memories of making and eating chicken and dumplings though. The rich creamy sauce, fall apart chicken and dumplings were so delicious. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.
Your block looks so cool. I enjoy following along as you conquer each square. The quilt should look amazing.

  4. Love your colours in this block and I loved the layout of the block in general. The meals around the dinner table sound wonderful. I remember one grandmother’s meals in particular. She made a great roast with the best gravy!
