Grandma’s Kitchen Block of the Week #19 of 25

Grandma’s Kitchen Block of the Week #19 by Pat Sloan  is called Mending Basket and our memory stories are supposed to relate to that, so here goes mine.

My Mammaw and all of my aunts had a sewing basket where all the mending resided until it was repaired. Unless it was an emergency repair it had to wait until a rainy day or winter time as summers were pretty busy around the farm. I remember lots of denim scraps to patch jeans and overalls and lots of buttons in jars.  I can remember my aunt sewing on buttons and patches while we watched Bonanza, the Rifleman, and Roy Rogers on TV.

I am a retired grandmother living in hot and sunny Florida. I spend most of my days doing what I love: sewing and quilting. I have a spoiled rotten Boston Terrier named Sami who keeps me busy mostly by cleaning up after her and refilling holes in the yard that she insists on digging and burying her toys. Of course then she digs them up and brings them into the house resulting in...you guessed it...more cleaning. I will be posting pictures of Sami, quilts, flowers, and other things as they come along.     I love this block – it looks like a really easy one, and I need a bit of a break this week! Of course, I love your memories even more! My mom did darn socks but never mended – that was my dad’s domain. He was always sewing something, so he basically got me interested. Anything he did, I wanted to do. He didn’t teach me though – it was more learning by observation. I loved them both so much – I had a fabulous childhood. ~smile~ Roseanne

  3. Peggy your fabrics are beautiful! I have never seen a spool block on the diagonal before; I love it! I really don’t recall my mother mending. I do remember her dismantling many lovely dresses from my auntie and refashioning them into new clothes for me. She was so clever that way. Like Roseanne above, I also learned to sew by observation.

  7. Well, Did not remember my grandparents, and of course Mother was not Susie Homemaker – She taught piano lessons and then taught school! BUT, I do remember and still watch the Rifleman. Love Andy also! Takes us back to when the world was not so troubled (?).

  11. You have so many great memories to share as you are making these blocks. Mom never really taught me to sew even though she made many of our clothes when we were young. Button jars are so fun, I love looking through them as finding interesting looking buttons!

    1. Thank you Beth. My mother never taught me either but I was lucky to have aunts that made sure I knew how to do things. I still love button jars and have several now that I look through for just the right button.
