Grandma’s Kitchen Block of the Week – #20 of 25

This week’s Grandma’s Kitchen block of the week by Pat Sloan  is called Lovely Dishes and so our memory story is all about dishes. Neither of my mammaws had a full set of ‘matched’ dishes. I do not know where the dishes came from but there was an assortment of patterns and styles on their shelves. I remember at one time gas stations would give you a dish with a fill up, and each station had different patterns. This was when gas was twenty-five cents a gallon! Neither of my grandparents owned a car but my uncles would give them the dishes they received at the gas stations.

I loved the different dishes with all kinds of pretty patterns. I remember picking the  plate with my favorite color or flower and filling it full of good food.

On a sad note, the quilting world lost one of our stars this week. Nancy Zieman of Sewing with Nancy passed away from cancer. She will be missed.

I am a retired grandmother living in hot and sunny Florida. I spend most of my days doing what I love: sewing and quilting. I have a spoiled rotten Boston Terrier named Sami who keeps me busy mostly by cleaning up after her and refilling holes in the yard that she insists on digging and burying her toys.     Who doesn’t mind having a heart in their blocks for a quilt along?! I think it was great that Pat dedicated it to Nancy. My mom had a ‘china cabinet’ that displayed various pieces of stuff. My dad had some trap shooting trophies in there, and her good dishes were stored in the bottom of it. I never recall using them! When we downsized her to an apartment, my niece got the whole set except for the soup bowls I had. They asked me for them (RUDE – I used them all the time!!) and then got me a set of four soup bowls for Christmas that year. I still use them, and love the story behind them now. I don’t have ‘good’ dishes – I use them all and if they break, oh well. Some are mismatched but that is part of the charm. ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. My mother had a special set of Thanksgiving dishes that she promised to my son. After she passed the dishes disappeared. Never did find out where they went. They were not valuable to anyone except my son. People can be very greedy. I have always said, “You never know a person until you divorce them or are involved in sharing items left after a death.” 🙂

  4. I know so sad about Nancy Z., it just not seem real. I remember watching her show on PBS, it was one of the first sewing shows I watched on TV. Lovely block and I so enjoy your stories that go along with the block. Do grandparents know how important they are to a kid growing up? So many special memories happen around grandparents!

I remember the same – until Mother decided to purchase a beautiful set in the ’70’s Of course I was on my own then – I remember when the grocery store would have dishes to give away – But I remember when gasoline was $.19 (cents) a gallon – does that make me older? LOL Beautiful block and memories
