Cute Little Fabric Baskets

I’m sure most of you have made these little baskets at one time or another. I believe I made the red one back in the 1980s and I know I sold a bunch of them at craft sales  I attended at our local city’s arts and crafts festivals in the 1990s. I honestly do not know when I found the time to do those things back then as I was working full time, taking up to 17 credit hours per semester at college, and hitting every craft festival I could for the extra money. Thank goodness I was younger then.

I think I got the idea for these little baskets from Crafts magazine. Back then we didn’t have Pinterest, Facebook, or blogs to share all the wonderful ideas we do now.

I found the red basket full of sewing machine attachments and decided I would make a few. I cut two pieces of coordinating pieces of fabric at 8 1/2″ sq. and a piece of light weight batting at 8 1/4″ sq. (I used Hobbs 80/20). The handle cut from the same fabrics at 2 1/2″  x 8 1/2″. The sewing is pretty self explanatory by looking at it, but if you have any questions, please just ask and I’ll help. (Sew wrong sides together with batting and handle placed and leave opening for turning. No batting in the handle.) I used (4) 1/4″ ribbons cut at 16″ long leaving a 4″ tail hanging over on each side, and I sewed them 2″ in from each side. Be careful to sew under the handle and not over it.

I hope this makes sense. Not really meant to be a beginners tutorial, but I will be glad to walk anyone through the steps if help is needed. I am so bad at giving directions without waving my hands. LOL

DSCN1424You could make these little cuties any size by adjusting your measurements. I love that they lay flat when you are not using just by untying the corners.

    I have NOT made any of these baskets. Ever. And I was certainly around in the 80s and 90s. I guess I was living in a cave and didn’t hear about them. ~sigh~ I sure am happy to see a post from you, though! I hope that means you are on the mend. I’ve missed you and your posts! ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. Thanks Roseanne. Maybe you were like me, I always said I don’t remember the 70s and I didn’t do drugs…I was so busy raising kids and working, the 70s flew past me without me realizing it. LOL I am glad to be back. Not 100% but better than I was.

  3. Hi Ms Peggy! I am 100% back! Lordy it feels so good! You and I have the same taste in fabric I purchased yardage of the same black and brown paisley fabric – think it was Hobby Lobby. I love it and have made covers for my cushions that I sit on. Sounds like you are doing better also! I like the little baskets. But, I have never done well making crafty things – I really like yours! Good for you working, raising children, going to night school and making time for crafts! Hugs

    1. I am so glad to hear the good news that you are better. Our bodies must be on the same healing schedule. Yes, I got the fabric at Hobby Lobby also and it is one of my favorites, my DIL’s also. I have made so many things with it, including her birthday quilt. My craft makings were a necessity to help fund everything needed in my life. It is hard to stop now. LOL

  5. Those are very cute baskets. I’ve seen them but never made one. I was around during those decades and I do remember not having the internet. I also remember getting our very first computer and how incredibly inadequate it was compared to what we have today. Just amazing! Glad to hear you are on the mend! 🙂

  7. Oh your baskets are too cute Peggy. I have never made them, I wish I had some of that youthful energy stored away somewhere, so many projects to try!

    1. Thanks Abbie. I wish I had some of the energy left also. I think you will like the videos. I watch them every time I need a lift. They are so funny. Be sure to check out the bungee jumping one. It is so funny and it is refreshing to be entertained without negative comments.
