Cute Fabric, Cute Sami, and Happy Mother’s Day

Look at this beyond cute fabric I found yesterday at Joann’s! Of course I had to get a ‘little’ of it as it had pictures of dogs like my Sami, and in sunglasses. As this is the only way I will ever see sunglasses anywhere near her cute little face I just could not let it get away.  This flannel fabric was only $6.99 a yard AND I had a 50% off coupon so it was meant to come home with me.

I’m not so sure she is as excited as I am with it, but she will learn to love it when it is made into a quilt…..maybe. 🙂

Merry Christmas Everyone-Sami and I Both Fooled Santa This Year

As you can tell from the look on Sami’s face, she knows she pulled one over on Santa this year with all the presents she received. In addition to her wonderful subscription to the monthly Bark Box, she got her all time favorite night-time snack, Pup-Peroni and several chew-aggressive toys. Mom even promised not to make her wear any of the cute clothes that she hates.

Isn’t this the cutest face? No, is isn’t Sami’s but it is on a t-shirt my son and DIL  got for Sami to give to me, along with jammie bottoms for Christmas. I just love it and it looks just like you know who. Along with my gift certificates from both of my kids I think I fooled Santa too. 🙂

 

 

Sami’s Weekly Update-Sami’s Side Of The Story

Mom, you know I am black, right? You know it is really dark at 6:00 in the morning when you take me outside to pee, right? You know you cannot see me, right? You know our yard is fenced in and I cannot get out, right? Then why do you start to yell for me at the top of your voice waking the neighbor and they start blinking their lights—then you blame me! 

OK. That is behind us. We will not do that again and remember, Santa is still watching. I have been very good, REMEMBER that. The little boys next door tell me that all the time. The guys that pick up the garbage tell me that too. I will be back next week with another report on how good I’ve been and how bad my mom has been. Thanks for visiting with me.

Sami’s December Bark Box

All I can say is Sami has her brother and sister-in-law fooled to think she has been a good girl this year. They got her a subscription to Bark Box for Christmas and she LOVES it.

I am always getting deliveries of fabrics, etc., and Sami never barks or acknowledges the mail carrier. The carrier even leaves her a doggy treat on packages and she still does nothing….until today.  It was Bark Box day!  This was the second Bark Box delivery but the first was the day after Thanksgiving when we were away from home. Today the mail carrier left the box at the door and Sami went wild..

As you will notice I only got two pictures. My camera will not take high speed pictures. All I got after the first two were blurs. 🙂

It is safe to say she really likes her Bark Box gift. The boxes come with three healthy food treats and two or three toys. Sami is a VERY aggressive dog with toys and she destroyed the toys in the first box in five seconds. My dad would have said she could tear up an anvil with a tooth pick. LOL

After contacting Bark Box they said they could send toys with rubber inserts. This box worked much better for Sami and we are very happy with the customer service department.

Traveling Sewing Pouch

My dear cousin, Tomalee, has been sewing yo-yos for many years. These are not your typical yo-yos, they are tiny-about 1″ finished. She takes them everywhere she goes so when she is stuck waiting she brings out her yo-yos and starts sewing. They are a great conversation starter and she had met many people while sewing in doctor offices.

I found the tutorial on You Tube but I cannot give credit to the maker as I lost the information.  I think Sami ate it. I will continue to search and will post an update when/if I find it. This pouch measures approximately 10″x10″ when folded and 10″x20″ unfolded. It has pockets inside on each end that I made with clear vinyl to store her little pieces of fabric, completed yo-yos,  and other things. I added a piece of felt for pins and needles and a piece of ribbon to tie on small scissors.  EDIT: I found the information and Sami was not guilty. It is on You Tube and called Quilted Sewing Organizer by Stitch Lovely Things and designed by Kea Bee.

An added note: I LOVE when people have their names (watermark?) on posts of pictures. This is great for me as I get some wonderful ideas from posts and I want to give credit. You will notice my pictures do not have my name….because I do not know how to do it. 🙂

Grandma’s Kitchen Block of the Week #24 of 25

One more block to go for Pat Sloan’s Grandma’s Kitchen Quilt Along. After finishing this block I realize I should have put ‘something’ inside of the basket but I can quilt some flowers and leaves while I am quilting. The name of this block is Grandma’s Purse and I am a little lost with this one. Neither of my mammaws carried a purse as they very seldom left the home place. They grew their own food, the doctor came to the house and the rolling store came by for things not grown. We also had the Jewel T man, a traveling salesman, that came about once a month with his car loaded down with items for sale.

Mammaw’s apron pockets took the place of purses. She had everything she needed in those deep pockets; hankies, safety pins (called latch pins then), pieces of twine, small scissors, spare buttons, a threaded needle, and even a biscuit sandwich wrapped in a muslin cloth to eat while working in the garden at times. Oh, that thought made me remember how good a biscuit and jelly sandwich would taste between breakfast and dinner.

These memories have been pleasant for me during the past weeks but it is amazing how much time I have devoted to the blocks of the week. Of course, at one time I was working on three at one time and I will have three pretty projects at the end.

I am looking forward to working on the Regatta quilt after New Years with my friend Roseanne at Home Sewn By Us as we will work at our own pace following the pattern. We plan on posting pictures of our progress (or lack of progress in my case). Everyone is welcome to join us. Check out Roseanne’s blog for more information. I also plan to sew more charity items.

Yesterday was my one year anniversary for blogging. This year has flown by and I have made so many new friends, discovered new patterns, and learned so much from the tutorials that my fellow bloggers have posted. I cannot believe I have so many followers and, in turn, follow so many talented people. I have quilted and even taught quilting classes but still learn new tips and techniques from blogging. I am looking forward to another year of learning and sharing.

 

 

Grandma’s Kitchen BOW #23/25

Pat Sloan at I Love To Make Quilts has posted us another great block. Block #23 is called That One Item  and our memory story is that one item that makes you think of your grandma.

Cooper Family Memories

The one thing that makes me think of Mammaw Cooper is seeing an older lady with her long hair twisted into a round bun. The only time I ever saw Mammaw with her hair down was at bedtime or when it was washed. She was a very private woman and was embarrassed to be seen with her hair down.

My daddy was the seventh child and the baby of the family. This was the second family for Pappaw Henry Cooper and he married Mammaw Cooper after his first wife died. He was a lot older than Mammaw and he died when my daddy was in the third grade. By this time most of my dad’s siblings were older and on their own. My dad quit school to help support Mammaw. Even though he did not have much formal education he was a very proud and smart man who owned his own businesses all his adult life.

 

 

 

Grandma’s Kitchen Block #22 of 25

This week’s block by Pat Sloan  is called Pick a Posey. Since most of my relatives lived on a farm, our lives were full of plants and flowers. My Mammaw Cooper had a beautiful bunch of roses that ran all along the fence at the back of the house. She never trimmed or fertilized them and they grew in abundance. When I asked her what kind of roses they were she always replied, “old timey climbing roses”. I don’t know if this was the correct name but it described them perfectly.

My Aunt Monnie had iris flowers is all colors all around her house. She called them ‘flags’. I didn’t know they had another name until I was in the seventh grade and studied Tennessee history where I discovered they are the Tennessee state flower. She also had lots of creeping phlox growing on all the banks behind the house. They grew so thick they choked out the grass and weeks and did not need mowing. If plants were not low maintenance they soon disappeared.

My Aunt Mary loved all kinds of flowers and she grew them everywhere. She especially loved peonies and would cut bouquets for the tables. She also had tulips, bachelor buttons, and daisies in addition to all the flowering trees such as dogwoods and crepe myrtles.

Grandma’s Kitchen Block of the Week #21 of 25

As Sami and I were out-of-town for Thanksgiving I am late finishing block #21 but here it is and it is so cute. I do not have enough contrast between my colors but I am happy with it. As you may guess, this block is called Telephone Time by Pat Sloan.

As neither of my grandparents had telephones my memory comes from my aunt’s phone. We had an old black phone that did not have a dial. When you picked up the phone and clicked the button the operator would ask, “Number please” and would then connect you. I can remember our old phone number (981-W2). We were on an eight party line system and  had a special ring (ours was two short rings) to know which family was to answer the call. We listened when we picked up the phone to make sure someone else was not using it. One lady on our party line would take the phone off the hook when she took her nap during the day and none of the other seven families were able to use the phone until she woke up and replaced the receiver.

At one point my aunt decided the ringing telephone was too annoying so she made arrangements with the phone company that we would not receive calls (or rings) and only have outgoing calls. She kept the phone this way until they finally did away with the party lines and we got a dial phone.

 

Moda Blockheads Block of the Week #38

Designer Betsy Chutchian of  Betsy’s Best Quilts and More is the designer of week #38 of the Blockheads block of the week. This striking block is called Peace and Plenty appropriately so for Thanksgiving week. When I first looked at this block the first thing I noticed was the pin wheel in the center and thought I had it all figured out before reading the instructions. The assembly was totally different from what I expected but with Betsy’s clear and easy to follow instructions it went together very quickly. Thanks Betsy for another fun and easy block.

On another note, Sami and I had Thanksgiving at my son and daughter-in-law’s lovely house in Georgia. We had a wonderful dinner and visit with all the family to include my DIL’s parents from Texas, my granddaughter and her husband, and my grandson and his girlfriend.  We were very honored the grandson surprised his momma with a visit from his Marine post in Arizona and grandson-in-law was able to stop in after his shift as a Georgia State Trooper. Between the two of these young men we were very well protected. Also, as the news has been shared on Face Book I think it is OK to share here: My granddaughter is expecting my first great-grandchild in June!!!! You all know how much I hoped this would happen soon. Everyone is beyond thrilled.

As most of you know, Sami the Wonder Dog has a reputation of being an extremely spoiled dog and VERY active. She lived up to her reputation but she got along pretty well with the other animals and even shared her toy with my grand dog, Bella.
