Moda Blockheads-Block #8

Moda Blockheads block #8 is Basket of Triangles by Betsy Chutchian. The Block of the Week project is based on 6 1/2″ blocks. I started with this size but I was not happy without the outcome so I decided to make my blocks 12 1/2″. I am very happy with this decision. Although the smaller blocks posted on the Facebook page are beautiful I did not think I could complete all 48 blocks and have any sanity left. I have a deep respect for the members that love sewing small blocks and do it so well. Several ladies even make 3″ blocks using each pattern. I would be a resident at Shady Rest if I tried that. 🙂

So far I have loved each pattern and learned a lot along the way.

I am happy with my color choices but I will redo this block. I did not trim my HST and my block measures 13 1/2″.

I am a retired grandmother living in hot and sunny Florida. I spend most of my days doing what I love: sewing and quilting. I have a spoiled rotten Boston Terrier named Sami who keeps me busy mostly by cleaning up after her and refilling holes in the yard that she insists on digging and burying her toys. Of course then she digs them up and brings them into the house resulting guessed it...more cleaning. I will be posting pictures of Sami, quilts, flowers, and other things as they come along. Glad to have you join me.

  1. Pretty block and snappy colors. Don’t blame you on changing the size. They can drive one nuts – as you can well see I am almost there! OR Nearly Insane. I bought that book and it may be in the Estate Sale when I am gone. That one would drive even me to the brink. Keep up the good work.

      1. Hi. I’m doing the Blockheads challenge & also a local block of the month 12″ pioneer quilt. Already did the 12″ [finished] Basket of Triangles block for the pioneer sampler. When I saw this week’s Blockhead, I said “you’ve gotta be kidding me.” It’s as difficult/tedious as week 3 [?]’s “Coronation Star”

      2. I agree, the Coronation was a rough one with so many pieces. I didn’t mind the Basket of Triangles except I didn’t trim down my pieces and the block was bigger than I wanted. The designers do not put what each pieced square supposed to measure. I’m sure they think we can figure it out, and we do. You are a brave person doing 2 challenges at the same time. Good luck with your blocks.

  2. LOL. Sami is my helper and Chief Quilt Inspector. She helps by grabbing any scrap or piece of fabric dropped on the floor and she inspects each and every quilt block that is placed on the floor while being arranged. 🙂 I would like to say she works cheap, but she makes more than I. 🙂
